Students and teachers from Senate District 11 schools were recognized at the State Legislature during the 2011 session. They included the members of Roosevelt High School’s Hiki No! News Team and their teacher advisor, Charleen Ego; the Washington Middle School Mathcounts team and coach, Sung Park; and the Boys and Girls Club’s 2011 Hawaii Youth of the Year Award winner, James Stabilio. All received certificates of commendation and congratulations from Senator Carol Fukunaga and colleagues in various ceremonies in the Senate chambers.

Roosevelt High School’s Hiki No! (Hawaiian for “Can Do”) News Team was one of 55 teams participating in the first season of PBS Hawaii’s first-in-the-nation student news network, launched in February 2011 (the first RHS episode aired on March 7, 2011). Experienced media teacher, Charleen Ego, encouraged the students to develop the skills necessary to successfully create, present and broadcast news stories of interest to student and other audiences. Mathcounts, the middle school mathematics enrichment and coaching competition, is an educational partnership that involves community volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students across the country. Open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders in public and private schools, the prestigious national initiative has for many years encouraged middle school students in their math studies. Washington Middle School’s Mathcounts team was the statewide winner in 2010, with 7th grader David Chang earning an individual 2nd place award and 8th grader Ethan Vo winning his second consecutive 1st place award. The top two students journeyed to Washington, DC for the National Mathcounts Competition, together with their teacher and coach Sung Park.

James Stabilio, a senior at McKinley High School, was the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii Youth of the Year for 2011. James was selected by his clubhouse to be a finalist on the basis of his leadership, resilience and demonstrated commitment of service to family, community and clubhouse. The Charles C. Spalding Clubhouse has been James’ home away from home for a number of years, where he participates in programs such as, “Leaders in Training” and sports and where he now volunteers on community projects, works with peers and staff and serves as a role model to younger members of the club. A top student, articulate speaker and exemplary volunteer, James represented Hawaii well in the western regional competition in June.
