The future of the McCully Recreation Center (closed during 2007-2009 for swimming pool repairs) was discussed at a community meeting sponsored by area legislators Senator Carol Fukunaga, Councilmember Ann Kobayashi and Representative Scott Saiki at the Lunalilo Elementary School Cafeteria. Residents responded to the question, "What would you like the Center to be used for?" with a wide range of concerns. They included:

• Some residents wanted to find out whether the City and County repairs would correct the ongoing leak problem that has plagued the second floor swimming pool since it was built. The leaks have resulted in repeated water damage to ground level classrooms and meeting space.

• Present repairs unfortunately do not include relining the pool itself, which residents believe is essential to correcting the leak problem. Residents asked whether the City's Department of Parks and Recreation could provide an estimate of the feasibility of relocating the swimming pool on the ground level.

• Generally, most residents who attended the community briefing expressed a strong desire to preserve as many activities as possible at McCully Recreation Center.

• If comprehensive pool repairs are not feasible within the existing McCully Recreation Center's 2nd story footprint, some residents expressed support for having the swimming pool relocated to another park or recreational space in close proximity to McCully-Moi'iliili (e.g., adjoining Stadium Park at the Department of Hawaiian Homelands parcel on which the Bowl-o-Drome facility is located).

Councilmember Ann Kobayashi shared the Department of Parks and Recreation blueprints of the renovations currently underway during the meeting. Area legislators requested additional information regarding swimming pool repairs, and plan to convene future community briefings on this issue.
