City Transportation Department Presents Findings on Reversing Piikoi-Pensacola Streets PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, March 17, 2010
In February 2010, City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services Director Wayne Yoshioka discussed his department's analysis of a proposal to reverse the direction of the one-way Piikoi and Pensacola Streets, and related ideas to improve traffic flow throughout the area.

The long-awaited analysis concluded that a reversal of the two streets could:

  • Increase the queue on a mauka-bound Pensacola Street as far makai as Kapiolani Boulevard
  • Shift demand to already-crowded on-ramps at Ward Avenue and Punchbowl Street
  • Divert traffic from the H-1 Freeway to surface streets
  • Have a negative impact or no discernable benefit to key neighborhood destinations.

As such, the City Department of Transportation Services submitted its comments to the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization's staff recommending against the proposal to reverse Piikoi and Pensacola Streets.
