In June 2010, urban Honolulu legislators Senator Carol Fukunaga, Congressman Neil Abercrombie, Representative Scott Saiki, and Councilmember Ann Kobayashi sponsored the first "Nourishing Our Neighborhoods & Aloha 'Aina Earth Day Recycling Day" to combine unlimited e-waste recycling with donations to Hawaii Foodbank. With sponsoring partners Schnitzer Steel, Times Supermarkets, Goodwill, and individual recycling vendors, residents dropped off computers, cooking oil, cellular phones, newspapers, used clothing, and batteries to recycle/donate. The event collected over 20,000 pounds (10 tons) of electronic equipment for recycling and received 812 pounds of canned goods. This event gave residents the opportunity to support a "triple bottom line" of recycling items safely, benefitting Washington Middle School through recycling revenues and promoting a sustainable lifestyle. With the inaugural Pacific Corporate Solutions (e-waste recycling)-Food Bank donation event achieving a high level of participation and support, additional "Nourishing Our Neighborhoods" events have been scheduled in other communities throughout Oahu.
